Machines of Morality
Machines of Morality shows a developement stage of the artist Lien-Chen Wang's current research "After Machines." It explores how artificial intelligence understands abstract concepts such as morality and religion. The artwork is divided into two parts. First, the audience uses buttons to judge whether randomly generated images produced by Al are "moral" or "immoral," thereby establishing a moral benchmark system for the Al. Second, statues of the world's four major religions are displayed, placed on movable machines. When the images captured by cameras are judged as "moral" by the Al, the statues move randomly; if judged as "immoral," they pause. The artist attempts to bypass traditional rational constructions of moral pathways in ethics, anthropology, sociology, etc., directly using experiential methods to let Al compute, discussing the absurdity of morality under technological regulations.
